Festival of Colors

We loved our day yesterday. 'Twas a great day that felt like the beginning of summer, always my favorite.

Brett and I woke up late, and instead of going to the gym, watched Grimm. I am obsessed with Grimm (TV show). I love how it mixes German folklore and magic with real life and murder mystery. Amazeballs.

Then we put sheets down in our car and dirty clothes on our backs to prepare for the Festival of Colors! We picked up our good friends Luke and Lindsay and made our way to Spanish Fork.

Before the mayhem.

Does anyone else find it strange that there is randomly a Hindu temple out among the farms of Spanish Fork?  I don't understand.

After the throwing:

I loved throwing hoards of bright chalk in stranger's faces. I got a large amount of purple chalk in my eyes and teeth; I had to scrub my teeth with all my might to prevent them from staining.

The weather was perfect; the music was psychedelic, the company was supreme, the location was exquisite. All in all, a memorable and fantastic Festival of Colors.

After we showered, we had a kabob night with Luke and Lindsay. We made the most d.e.l.i.c.i.o.u.s. kabobs I have ever eaten ever.

Chicken, red and green peppers, pineapple, bacon, and onions. I ate about six of them and I am proud of it.

We spent the rest of the night chatting, eating vanilla ice cream with caramel and grilled pineapple, and of course laughing.

Yesterday was a breath of fresh air. Now I can take on this next insane week with happiness.

Happy Easter! Jesus Christ was resurrected this day. He ascended to Heaven to be with our Heavenly Father. He lives. I love Him.

loving life

How will you love life this Spring?

Brett and I had a great night last night. We went to the gym and then out to SLAB Pizza with Stannabel, and Elliott and Maggie. I didn't get any pictures, triste!

Today we are going to The Festival of Colors with Luke and Lindsay and we cannot wait! Especially me.

Pictures to come.

Have a great Saturday and remember to find the goodness in life.

starting anew

If your New Years goals didn't last, make new ones for Spring.

Springtime is when the trees are sprouting their buds. The time when we do Spring cleaning. The time when we can start fresh.

How will you start fresh this year?

things i'm lovin

I currently love:

The weather. It's warm!

Brett. He has been making my lunches every day and I love it. I forget to bring food to school so I'm starving by around 3 p.m. and just want to go home and devour a whole pizza. To prevent me from becoming an obese monster, Brett has been kindly packing my lunches like a good househusband. I loved my turkey sandwich today. Thank you, honey!

The Family: A Proclamation to the World. I believe this, and that's all I'm going to say.

This song. Love my Muse.

And a bunch of other stuff, but especially those four right now.

Have a great Thursday!

What are you doing for April Fools? I'm going to get Brett really good somehow.

designing is so fun

I've been doing so much designing lately and I've been loving every second of it. What I post on this blog isn't even the half of it. Between Familius and Stowaway and my personal fun, designing has become an everyday occurrence.

This is a rough draft; the spacing needs a little work.

Anywho, have a great Wednesday!

easter egg hunt

Easter is this Sunday and I'm super excited. Last year I was in Guatemala for Easter. This year I'll be keeping it real in Provo.

Maggie Wickes tells of her Easter traditions here: http://familius.com/the-art-of-the-easter-egg-hunt

What are your family Easter traditions?

boy or girl makes a party

My great cousin and his wife, Brandon and Jessie, are preggo! On Friday we had their baby's gender reveal party. Neither Brandon or Jessie knew the baby's gender; they had the ultrasound technician hide it from them in the pinata.

I guessed that it was a boy. Was I right?

Brandon, Chase, and Jenna all felt the same way. Brett thought it was a girl. You wear a party necklace of the color of your gender of selection.

We played some old wive's tale games to determine whether it was a boy or girl. According to the wive's tales, it was a boy. Jessie thought it was a girl. Hmmm . . .

Pinata reveal.

It's a boy! The ultrasound pictures were in the pinata too. I knew it was a boy since I first learned they were expecting. I just knew. The same thing happened when my mom was pregnant with Sophie. None of us doubted for a second that it was a girl. I always, always knew she was going to be a girl.

Maybe I'm a clairvoyant?

Happy Sunday! Sadly, it's snowing here, so we won't go on any cute little Sunday picnics. Sigh.

good book friday: woman warrior

I didn't forget about Good Book Friday, I just got lazy.

There are a lot of books that I've been reading for school. I've been enjoying many of them.

One of my favorites is The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts by Maxine Hong Kingston.

Isn't she the cutest? I want to have long white hair like that when I'm old. Or maybe I'll dye it rainbow just for kicks. O, and I'm going to wear really long, beaded, turquoise necklaces and maxi skirts. YES.

Woman Warrior is a memoir that compiles Chinese myth with American culture. It is beautifully written and explores the role of females in society, whether it be Asian or American. Kingston is one of the most influential Chinese-American writers of all time, and I love that she was open to discussing hard issues when her contemporaries were not. I love that she imagines herself as Fa Mulan; that was my favorite chapter. I highly recommend this book. Read it. Now.

kindness for kindness

I'm kind of obsessed with this picture.

If you've ever been bullied, teased, or humiliated by others, remember to use The Golden Rule: Treat others the way you'd like to be treated. Love your enemies.

because of a loving mother

My amazing husband wrote an article for Familius called "Because of a Loving Mother" about how his mom helped him overcome and heal from being teased in school.

It's a beautiful piece of writing. Read it here

st. patty's day

I completely forgot to wear green on St. Patrick's Day but I didn't let anyone pinch me because I'm Irish; therefore to pinch me would be the most egregious sin.

Brett and I went to our friend's apartment (Luke and Lindsay) to make some delectable Kneader's french toast knock-offs complete with the sugary syrup goodness. I couldn't even eat two whole pieces; the flavor was so intense.

Lindsay put some green food dye in the milk and that's about how sage-festive our meal got. So yummmmy.

Lindsay and I got a picture together after church. The day was beautiful. I'm ecstatic that the snow is gone and the sun is shining. I ate my lunch outside today. Can you say bliss?

Brett was sick with a cold/flu yesterday so we spent the rest of the day inside. I'm currently so very behind on my reading for one of my classes. I have to read fifteen young-adult novels by April 11 and I've read two. So yesterday was dedicated to reading reading reading. But hey, it's better than doing Calculus or something repulsive like that.

HAGM! (Have a great Monday)

Be Strong

Louisa May Alcott is one of my favorite writers. I've been in love with Little Women since I was ten years old.

Remember to be strong today. Don't let the world get you down.

Courtney's shindig

This week was crazy crazy, but I say that about every week. And it's true. For every week. (Lots of repetition of week, can someone say assonance?) (You'll only understand that if you're an English major of have studied poetic/rhetorical devices on your own time)

Some highlights:
(1) I watched The Bachelor Finale with my good friend Lindsay, and Catherine won!
(2) Brett and I went out to Red Mango on Tuesday with Elliott and his new girlfriend Maggie. We got the mango tart frozen yogurt and it was pleasing to the taste.
(3) I spent my evening on Wednesday from 4:00 to 11:30 p.m. putting together Stowaway magazine.
(4) Brett was gone for two nights and I wasn't that scared! Granted I did put two chairs and a stool in front of the door and slept with pepper spray and a knife by my bed. Better safe than dead.
(5) I didn't fall on my face or fart or something embarrassing during my English Symposium presentation.

Last night, my old roommates and I went out to celebrate Courtney because she's getting married. It was so fun to see the gals again.

Courtney's the one in the white. We went to Guru's and there was karaoke. We did not know there would be this karaoke. We should make a rule for humanity that one does not participate in karaoke if one has a voice comparable to a witch's shriek.

After many attempts, we were sad to admit that we didn't get a good group picture. The gods were not in our favor.

Girl time is better than sliced bread.

more of the oh no

My life feels like one big "Oh No" moment right now. This semester has been just the craziest. Tomorrow I am presenting at the English Symposium. My presentation is called "Constriction in Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome and Summer." Doesn't that sound like the most intriguing thing you've ever heard?

This weekend I am going to detox. I'm going to go to the gym, make dinner, do the dishes, read for fun, and hey, maybe even go for a hike. It will be magical.

oh no continued

Fun designs I get to make for my internship.

stuff to make me smile

This weekend we did fun things.

After three (yes, three) failed attempts to see Warm Bodies, we were finally able to see it. I swear every teenager, her dog, and her bunny went to see that movie. We saw it with our good friends Luke and Lindsay. Brett and I loved it, me especially, but I think the jury is still out with Luke and Lindsay.

After la pelicula, Brett and I made a trip to our friend Smith's to get some midnight snacks.

Brett recently got a beard card and it has been the best thing for him since he married me.

Cheese rice cakes are my f.a.v.o.r.i.t.e. I have snakelike black holes as eyes in this picture. If you look into them, you'll become petrified. (Harry Potter allusion, all the way.)

Saturday, I edited a book the entire day. But, at noon I got a knock on my door. It was Robyn (my    visiting teacher) with an amazing bouquet of flowers! This totally brightened my day and made editing that darned book not quite so tedious.

Sunday we had church and then my grandma's 80th birthday celebration! She's lookin' good! We went around in a circle and shared memories we have of her. I loved it when she used to rub my arms and play with my hair every Christmas evening when the family was gathered. My grandma is the most loving person I know. I love her always.

No, I am not pregnant. My dress is poofy; deal with it. And sad news, my camera broke. So I've been resorting to my iPhone, which sometimes takes less than pristine pictures.

All in all, a great weekend. I woke up at 3:00 a.m. feeling pretty crappy, so I've been at home today trying to sleep off whatever is messing with my stomach.

But tomorrow is another day!
